Curriculum at Long Knowle
At Long Knowle Primary School it is our INTENT to provide a curriculum that aims to excite and inspire our children, and that enables them to develop the skills, knowledge and experiences which will secure the best possible opportunities for success in life.
For the last five years Long Knowle has held a set of values which underpin all that we do within our curriculum.
Our school will be a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is expected to be courteous, tolerant and considerate.
Our pupils will be successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve their very best.
Our pupils will become confident individuals who are able to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Our pupils will develop skills to become responsible citizens, who make a positive contribution to 21st century society, thriving in and shaping the future.
Our curriculum will provide enjoyable and creative opportunities for learning and teaching, using a wide range of resources and technology to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential academically, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Our school will work in partnership with governors, parents and the wider community to support and encourage pupils in all aspects of their learning and in their development as independent, curious and resilient individuals.

We intend to develop articulate, caring children who are keen to LEARN and who have a thirst for KNOWLEDGE; children who are resilient and not afraid to try, so that they can make their own best possible PROGRESS; children who have high aspirations and who, through hard work and effort, can SHINE!
Over the last year we have been undertaking a review of the content and structure of our curriculum so that we can offer well-planned and progressive learning across the school. Our initial focus has been on Reading, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Computing. RE and PSHE review is just beginning. A review of all other areas will begin in the Spring term 2020.
We deliver much of our broad and balanced curriculum through topics – giving opportunities for subject-specific key skills and knowledge to be learned within the context of that topic. Hooks and enrichment activities supplement each topic to enable our children to make connections in their learning and acquire a deep understanding.
Where learning does not fit into a topic, subjects may be taught discretely, still with opportunities for those connections to be made.
Subjects may be taught weekly, or in blocks of learning as appropriate.
General topic themes are identified in advance, and planning is tailored to the interests and learning needs of the particular group of children. Our planning is evolving to ensure that the children’s learning has meaning within in their local context. Staff liaise closely to ensure that our lessons meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and ensure continuity and progression.
Foundation Stage topics are decided termly and are organised to be able to take account of the children’s interests and suggestions.
We have a strong emphasis on English and mathematics – reading, writing, speaking and listening, calculating, using and applying mathematical skills in a variety of situations.
We teach phonics and English skills (spelling, handwriting, grammar) with a daily 30 minute focus session. We are a ‘Reading School’; we have developed our English teaching to be based around a class text, which, with appropriate challenge and support, is made accessible for all pupils in the class. Children have opportunities to read throughout the day, both in English lessons and across the wider curriculum.
We are working with our children to develop fluency and stamina in their reading, to encourage their desire and ability to read for pleasure.
We believe in giving children the opportunity to create high quality writing, through reading, skills practise, drafting and editing. We use a range of stimuli from written texts, visual literacy and cross curricular links to inspire our children. Vocabulary continues to be developed as a key driver in the teaching of writing, exposing children to a language-rich curriculum from our Foundation Stage.
We use the ‘Story Time Phonics’ scheme in Early Years and Year 1 to support our phonics teaching, which gives the children the opportunity to learn through ‘real’ books.
From September 2019, to ensure whole consistency and progression, the school has adopted the DfE approved ‘Power Maths’ scheme. New concepts are shared within the context of an initial related problem, which children are able to discuss with a partner. This initial problem solving activity prompts discussion and reasoning. In KS1, these problems are almost always presented with objects (concrete manipulatives) for children to use. Children may also use manipulatives in KS2. Teachers use careful questions to draw out children’s discussions and their reasoning. The class teacher then leads children through strategies for solving the problem, including those already discussed.
Independent work provides the means for all children to develop their fluency further, before progressing to more complex related problems. Mathematical topics are taught in blocks, to enable the achievement of ‘mastery’ over time. Each lesson phase provides the means to achieve greater depth, with more able children being offered rich and sophisticated problems, as well as exploratory, investigative tasks, within the lesson as appropriate. Children have a daily maths lesson.
We also teach or rehearse times tables daily; this is supported by the ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ App – highly popular with children both at home and at school!
At Long Knowle Primary School we deliver high quality lessons in science that allow the pupils to develop skills and knowledge to enable them to think scientifically. We have a clear overview of the curriculum that covers biology, chemistry and physics from Y1-Y6, showing continuity and progression across the school. Science is taught either weekly in Y1-Y6 or blocked in units. In early years science is taught through knowledge and understanding of the world and physical development. Staff have designed knowledge organisers to help the children to rehearse and retain the knowledge they are taught for each topic. The subject leader checks to ensure the curriculum is being followed; this is done through pupil voice, book trawls, lesson monitoring and learning walks
At Long Knowle Primary School we believe that computing should be a tool for learning and that computing should permeate the curriculum, allowing our children to develop the necessary skills needed for lifelong learning in the 21st Century.
Computing comprises of four strands, which are delivered to ensure a balanced curriculum:
Computer science - the study of the foundational principles and practices of computation and computational thinking, and their application in the design and development of computer systems
IT - the creative and productive use and application of computer systems, hardware and software
Digital Literacy - the ability of learners to use, express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology
E-Safety – understanding safe practice and appropriate behaviours on line, and knowing how to apply them both in all use of technology
History and Geography
Within our teaching of History we aim to help pupils gain knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It will inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
The aim of Geography teaching at Long Knowle is to stimulate children’s interest and understanding of places and environments. Through their work in Geography, children learn about their local area - Long Knowle, Wednesfield and Wolverhampton -and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. They learn how to draw and interpret maps and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world and enables them to recognize the importance of sustainable development for the future of mankind.

Religious Education at Long Knowle Primary School celebrates the diversity of the multicultural world in which we live. Our children explore issues within and across a range of different faiths, as we want our pupils to develop understanding of and respect for other religions, beliefs, values, festivals and traditions. As they study Christianity, the Islamic faith, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism, our children will be given time to reflect and explore, express and explain their own views and make reasoned and informed judgements on religious, moral and social issues. It is our intention that children leave Long Knowle as informed citizens with kind hearts, respect for all religions and an awareness of what they can do to make the world a better place.
We teach RE according to the Wolverhampton Agreed Syllabus (SACRE).
At Long Knowle, children are taught about the importance of mental and physical health, including self-esteem and body image. We believe it is crucial to build effective citizens through teaching about positive relationships, keeping safe, behavioural norms and setting aspirational goals. We believe giving children these learning opportunities sets them up for further learning in the future.
We use a number of strategies, programmes and providers to support PSHE including SUMO, Relax Kids, Wider Learning (Peer mentors and Digital Ambassadors), Project Give and the School Nursing Service.
Through or sports lessons and through a range of extra-curricular sports at lunchtime and after school, PE at Long Knowle promotes opportunities for children to be creative, cooperative and competitive and to face up to different challenges both as individuals and in groups. Children learn to develop the notion of fair play, honest competition, good sportsmanship and dealing with both success and defeat.
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils: • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music • Be taught to sing, create and compose music • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated. At Long Knowle the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
Music is currently taught throughout the school using the ‘Charanga’ scheme.
